Art & Soul Reloaded Week 1: Social Media Log

Art & Soul Reloaded
During November I read Art & Soul Reloaded by Pam Grout.  The book offers inspirational essays and weekly prompts to boost the reader's creativity.  I plan to follow the weekly prompts from the book throughout 2018 and catalog my progress here, on my blog.  Hang on, dear readers, this could get interesting!

Week 1: Analyze your time
During the first week of 2018, I kept a log of my time.  Time spent on social media and time spent watching tv.  I decided to keep a log of everything I did this week in half hour increments.

I noticed a few important things when I looked back at this log.

Art & Soul Reloaded Week 1: Social Media Log1.  I do not set aside much time for my creative pursuits.

2.  I follow the same pattern almost every day of the week.

3.  I don't watch as much tv as I thought I did.

4.  I don't use social media as much as I thought I did.

I did try this week to increase my creative time.  I went upstairs to my craft room, sat at my work table, and stared at a current art project.  I picked the project up.  I turned it around in my hands.  I stared at it.  Unfortunately, after a long day at work, it was really hard to add anything to the project.  Finally I walked away from my work table, I walked away from my craft room, and I made dinner instead.

I understand what Pam Grout means when she writes, "What right do you have to refuse the voice that whispers to you every morning, every afternoon, and every evening as you retire spent and exhausted from denying again and again the hand of the Great Collaborator?"  but sometimes I lack the energy to create.  That's when I write ideas down or make sketches in my idea notebook, pin a project idea to Pinterest, or start following an inspiring account on Instagram.

I really liked this activity.  It was really interesting to pay attention to how I am using my time.  It made me more aware of how little time I spend creating every day.  It made me want to search out the spare minutes and devote them to something creative.  I encourage you to grab a piece of paper and track your activities for one week.  Who knows what you might learn about yourself.

Do you have difficulty finding creative time during the work week?
Have you ever logged your social media and tv use?  Do you plan to try this prompt?

Monthly Check-in: April 2017

Another month has passed us by, so it's time for another monthly check-in.

Most Popular Blog Post
No blog posts this past month, so yeah... no popular posts.
I've been spending a lot of time revising my posting schedule, thinking about what I want the 10th year of my blog to be (can you believe this blog recently turned 9 years old?  More about that in a later post), researching and trying to make this blog better than ever before.

This month, with 18 likes, this picture of bubbles on the beach was my most popular photo.

Personal Stuff
I had a week to relax this week but very soon my summer starts to get very busy.  I still want to continue with my fitness goal and keep up with this blog but please be understanding if a few posts are a little late.  It feels like the summer is running away too quickly.  Soon I will be back at work for another school year.

Also, just last night I downloaded Pokémon Go.  I never thought that I would be interested in a game like this but already my husband and I have chosen three walks/bike rides to chase Pokémon when we normally would have been sitting around in the living room or backyard.  It has dramatically increased our activity level.  The only reason I am sitting and blogging right now is because his phone battery died.  I'm sure we will be back at it soon.

Interesting Stuff I Found on the Internet
I have been watching Dede Willingham's Youtube channel for months now.  She is so much fun!  The videos are long but if you are interested in art journals, artist trading cards, coloring books, or mixed media techniques, you should check her out.  I just love watching her create things and I especially love her laugh!

I have also been watching Paul Priestley's Youtube channel and completing the assignments on his How to Draw: Basic Techniques playlist.  I might even be learning something :)

Most Popular Instagram Post
My most popular Instagram post this week was a tie between a picture from the B-52s concert I went to see on Friday and the zucchini I grew!

New Year's Resolutions 2015

This post is difficult for me to write.  This year was busy, stressful, and overwhelming at times.  My husband went back to school, I took on new responsibilities at work, and, well, we have an old, diabetic cat.  I did not complete one of my crafty New Year's Resolutions for the year, so I am going to try again.  This year, I am taking the same 6 resolutions and giving them a second chance.  Here's to a year of more craft and less stress.

Crafty Resolutions for 2014 2015
1.  Post about my crafty progress on this blog at least twice a week.
2.  Continue my Year of Pinterest, trying a different pin from one of my Pinterest boards each month.
3.  Start my Etsy store.
4.  Complete Craft Yarn Council classes to become a knit and crochet instructor.
5.  Complete my Cedar Grain sweater and my Groovyghan, then start a skull shawl.
6.  Take care of myself (floss, moisturize, exercise, eat well, etc.)

Do you have any resolutions for the New Year?

New Year's Resolutions 2014

Another new year and once again it is time to review my resolutions from the past year and post my new goals for the coming year.  Always a fun time :)

Crafty Resolutions for 2013
1.  Start my Etsy shop and do some craft fairs
Yeah, this one did not happen.  I will continue to dream and work on this goal in 2014.
2.  Work on branding my blogs
I think I have made some progress on this goal.  I have decided on a schedule for both my craft and writing blog.  I will continue to work on this goal as my brand becomes more clear.
3.  Diet and exercise
This goal actually went pretty well. I started doing short 15 minute workouts before work 4 times a week, I got a new road bike and biked much more, and I counted calories through the majority of the year. ☺
4.  Try more new things, especially designing.
I did try some designing this year (Dobby for example), I tried nail art, and did some test-knitting.  ☺
5.  Participate in WIP Wednesday, FO Friday and Ravelry challenges
I participated in all three of these regular events and had a blast doing it.  ☺

Overall, it was a great year.  Now onto this year....

Crafty Resolutions for 2014

What are your goals for the new year?
